Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop - April 26 to May 1
Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop
Featuring YA Books with a fairy tale theme - Hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & vvb32reads
For my fairy-tale feature, I asked Author Marissa Meyer a few questions!
Cinder is based loosely on Cinderella - What made you choose to do that particular fairy-tale?
I'd had the idea to do a series of sci-fi-twisted fairy tales for a while and had been playing around with different ways I could futurize some of my favorite tales. Then the idea for a cyborg Cinderella came to me as I was falling asleep one night, and it just clicked. Her story began to piece itself together and worked surprisingly well in the futuristic landscape I was creating, so I went with it. There's also an appeal to Cinderella being such a timeless story, one that can cross any location or culture. The themes are universal in a way that really works, even in the far future.
Are you planning on writing any more fairy-tale based stories?
CINDER is the first of a four-book series called The Lunar Chronicles, each of which is based on a different fairy tale. Though Cinder continues to be the main hero throughout, she'll soon be joined by Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White, as they band together against the evil queen.
I do have some other ideas for retellings outside of The Lunar Chronicles, so we'll see what I'm inspired to work on when the time comes.
Are you more of a Grimm fairy-tale or Disney fairy-tale kind of gal? (dark/light)
I was raised on Disney movies and they'll always have a warm place in my heart, but I'm definitely a bigger fan of the Grimm tales. I'm fascinated by their symbolism and gore and how they didn't shy away from truly horrifying themes - rape, murder, incest, cannibalism, it's all there. It makes me question the purpose they would have served hundreds of years ago, and why they continue to influence our society as much as they do.
Tell us, what is your least favourite fairy-tale?
This was a tough one, but after much consideration, I'm going to go with "The Princess and the Pea." True, many fairy tales are based on ridiculous premises, but this one seems worse than most. Why would placing a pea under a pile of mattresses indicate a true princess? Why would the king and queen believe that the pea "bruised" the girl during her sleep? I just don't get it.
And of course, what is your most favourite fairy-tale?
I honestly couldn't choose! Of course Cinderella ranks highly, but I also love The Little Mermaid, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Brier Rose... I have many, many favorites.
