"Blast from the Past" is my brand new feature - a post in which I talk about a book I read more than a year or so ago! Today I am featuring...

The Messenger - Markus Zusak

Publisher: Picador

Synopsis: ""Meet Ed Kennedy - underage cab driver, pathetic card palyer, and useless at romance. He lives in a shack, and he's hopelessly in love with his best friend, Audrey. His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence, until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery. That's when the first Ace arrives...That's when Ed becomes the messenger.

Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary), until only one question remains. Who's behind Ed's mission?"

When it was released - January 2002

When I first read it - Sometime in 2006

What I thought of it -

When I first saw it on the shelf of an airport newsagent, I just couldn't resist. I hadn't read The Book Thief, I didn't know who Markus Zusak was, but the synopsis completely drew me in. It's safe to say, I absolutely loved this novel, and devoured it on the 6 hour flight I bought it for.

The Good -

This story has so much mystery and intrigue, it kept me guessing throughout the whole time. Ed seems like such a sad pathetic guy, and in many ways he was, but you watch him progress as a character and it is truly amazing.

The Bad -

It wasn't long enough.... I just wanted MORE.

    Quotes -

    “Sometimes people are beautiful.
    Not in looks.
    Not in what they say.
    Just in what they are.”

“It's not a big thing, but I guess it's true--big things are often just small things that are noticed.”

“I'm not the messenger at all.

    1. Love the first quote! I like the idea of revisiting books you read a while ago. I have read The Book Thief, but nothing else by Zusak - this sounds like a good read, though!
