Balance
Inspiration, to
me, is the same as dreams. It’s an imaginary world where all these wonderful
things can be found, lived, said, done - and every single thing lingers on
forever. I think without the imagination - without our dreams - we would have nothing.
Unfortunately, I
also believe in balance; the simple fact that good always comes along with the
bad. It has to, really. If not, there would be absolutely no balance in the
universe and we would all be confused all the time. Say you fall in love with a
‘hot vamp’ in literature who has a soul, then there simply has to be
another book that comes along starring the ‘hot vamp’ who cares nothing for the
heart who loves him. In other words, for every dream there is a nightmare that
walks hand-in-hand.
When I was
thirteen, I felt as if I were stuck in one of those nightmares. The same
feeling I think we all get in our teenage years at some point. I had lost my
grandfather - a person who I could literally speak everything to, and was an
icon of mine. As I’ve said before, this is the time where I thought about the ‘above’
world. For me, I was confused. I had absolutely no idea why an angel of any
sort would want to walk ‘among us’ and deal with war, poverty, and just plain
annoyances we have down here. I was wondering how such a pure being could step
into a world of human emotion that included anger, hate, heartbreak, etc. and
live among us. In fact, in my mind, I saw them as ‘winged ones’ who simply took
one look at the place and hightailed it out of here.
That’s when I had
that first dream of Matt. No, this wasn’t
one of romance, or something that should be written as a sweeping saga atop a
moor - Matt was just a face. He was a friend - the same age as me - who showed
me around like a tour guide would, and talked to me about his world, his life
and his reasons for wanting freedom. He made me see that my grandfather was
just fine, which made me feel better, but he also was a great deal of fun.
He asked me
questions, just as many as I did of him.
And it got to the point, as I aged, that I noticed Matt was simply a
teen like me (except much prettier J). He longed for freedom - to get out of his
home and ‘see the world.’ He actually wanted
to experience the emotions we have down here, for the simple fact that with the
nightmare came the dream. You see, he was on the opposite side of the fence. He
figured that since there were tough, hard emotions down here that he would be
very excited to be a part of all the good ones. Love, friendship, family,
adventure, excitement - things like
that.
It took another
decade before I saw this guide in my dreams again, and that was when my father
passed away far too early. Although I had inspirations to become a writer, Matt
was my inspiration for the book. I suddenly thought it was time for the world
to hear his story, and when I came up with Emily, the warrior/angel team was
born.
I hope readers
like the story, I really do. I hope they can see and hear the amazing emotions
that came along for Matt and Emily, and feel the grit and hardship that they
had to face in order to get the ‘good’ with the ‘bad.’ I also hope that
everyone remembers - teenager or adult - that even though you may feel like you’re
stuck in a nightmare every once in a while, there most certainly IS a dream
that will come along to make it all worthwhile.
Until Next Time,
Everybody.
