Wow. I just want to HUG Brigid Kemmerer right about now for writing such an amazing series! This has got to be my favourite of 2012!
In Storm, the book centered around Chris and Becca. This time around, in Spark, we get to know Gabriel a little better, and we meet Layne.
Gabriel is a fire elemental. He loves fire, the pull of it, the way it talks to him. Except he isn't overly good at controlling it. Yet. Layne is just a girl in his math class. She's a brainiac, who loves to wear turtle-neck sweaters and Gabriel doesn't even know her name. Houses are being lit alight all over town, and everything think's its Gabriel. Even his family. Now he is fighting with his twin, hanging out with Hunter and getting confused about Layne.
Let me start by saying after reading Storm, I though Nick was my favourite Merrick. Now, after reading Spark, it is definitely Gabriel. We see a side of him that was hidden from us in the first book, and I love it. Sure, he is still the same old tough, smart-ass he was in Storm and you still see a lot of that side in Spark. But some of his toughness he puts to good use this time. We also see the more sensitive side of him. It's so amusing to see him fumble over a girl. Not the Gabriel we knew before.
Layne might be a brainiac, with only one friend (who is a total bitch by the way) but she has bite. She was not the kind of girl I expected her to be, but I loved her anyway. She stands up to Gabriel and he takes it! Plus she has to deal with having a deaf-brother who is constantly picked on, a father who works too much and a mother who doesn't even care.
In Spark, Gabriel has to deal with failing math, playing hero and rescuing people trapped in fires, getting to know Layne and her brother and not speaking to Nick for longer than ever before. This book is full of action, romance and brotherly hate/love. We learn more about Gabriel and that will either change your view or make you love him even more.
I highly recommend this book, for lovers of Storm and all other readers alike. If you haven't read Storm, I suggest you do it now!
