Throne of Glass Novellas - Sarah J Maas

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass #0.1)

"On a remote island in a tropical sea, Celaena Sardothien, feared assassin, has come for retribution. She’s been sent by the Assassin’s Guild to collect on a debt they are owed by the Lord of the Pirates. But when Celaena learns that the agreed payment is not in money, but in slaves, her mission suddenly changes—and she will risk everything to right the wrong she’s been sent to bring about."

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord is a fantastic opening to Celaena Sardothien. We learn what she was like before her betrayal, before she was sent to Endovier Salt Mines. This is a completely different Celaena to the one in Throne of Glass. This is the story of her freeing slaves and going against the King of the Assassins for the first time. The story where we meet Sam. This novella is where her problems start.

The Assassin and the Desert (Throne of Glass #0.2)

"The Silent Assassins of the Red Desert aren’t much for conversation, and Celaena Sardothien wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s not there to chatter, she’s there to hone her craft as the world’s most feared killer for hire. When the quiet is shattered by forces who want to destroy the Silent Assassins, Celaena must find a way to stop them, or she’ll be lucky to leave the desert alive."

In The Assassin and the Desert, we pick up almost as soon as we left off in the previous novella. Celaena and Sam are being punished for their crime on Skull Rock. Celaena is being sent to the Silent Assassins in the Red Desert, where she has to earn her way back to Rifthold and back to Arobynn and Sam. She learns more after her craft, and how badly betrayal can hurt. A wonderful second novella.

The Assassin and the Underworld (Throne of Glass #0.3)

"When the King of the Assassins gives Celaena Sardothien a special assignment that will help fight slavery in the kingdom, she jumps at the chance to strike a blow against an evil practice. The misson is a dark and deadly affair which takes Celaena from the rooftops of the city to the bottom of the sewer—and she doesn’t like what she finds there."

Celaena has successfully come back from the Red Desert alive, and with enough money to pay for her freedom - one away from Arobynn and the assassins. But first, she has another mission, one that seems easy and straight forward. But nothing is as it seems. Sam is back in this novella (YAY!) and we learn more about Arobynn's true colours. An exciting lead up to the last novella!

The Assassin and the Empire (Throne of Glass #0.4)

"Celaena Sardothien is the assassin with everything: a place to call her own, the love of handsome Sam, and, best of all, freedom. Yet, she won’t be truly free until she is far away from her old master, Arobynn Hamel; Celaena must take one last daring assignment that will liberate her forever. But having it all, means you have a lot to lose . . ."

What an absolutely enthralling lead up to the Throne of Glass novel. In this fourth novella, all is revealed about how Celaena is set into Endovier. Sam and Celaena have decided it is time to move far far away from Arobynn and the Assassin's Guild. Plans are in order, and they have to complete one more contract to be able to afford the move. Be ready for a heart-breaking lead up - I cried!

I absolutely loved Throne of Glass, and I loved each of these novellas just as much! I highly recommend them to everyone before you read Throne of Glass. Of course, it won't matter if you don't, but so many little things that come up are all in the novellas so you won't be wondering. Plus Sarah J Maas is a fantastic writer, and these novellas are no different!!
