Throne of Glass - Sarah J. Maas
August 7, 2012

"After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the kings council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined."

Celaena Sardothien is an 18 year old assassin and a girl at that. She is famous as her work as Ardalan's Assassin, everyone knows her name. But she was betrayed, turned into the King of Ardalan and sentenced to hard labor in the salt mines. A year later, the Crown Prince Dorian has her released for she is to act in a vicious competition to win position of the King's Champion. But something evil lurks in the castle, killing off the competitors one by one. Celaena has to figure out what is happening before she is next.

I have to start by saying I have read and absolutely loved all 3 of the novella's that Sarah J. Maas has released. She has yet to release the fourth, which I am dying to read and find out how they all tie in which Throne of Glass. When I started reading Throne of Glass, I had high expectations, yet this novel blew them all out of the park. This story was absolutely amazing and I loved every moment of it!

Celaena is such a complex character. She has seen many horrors yet she still fusses over her looks and the attention of men. Throughout the book, I just wanted to smack her every time she worried about how she looked or why a man wasn't looking at her the way she wanted. After everything, you think she wouldn't be that girl anymore, yet that is just who she is and you love her character anyway. She is determined and ruthless, yet funny and witty.

The two other characters I loved most were Chaol, the captain of the guard and Dorian, the Crown Prince. Chaol is hard and hides his feelings deep inside. Only few times does he smile or laugh, but you just love his character anyway. Dorian might pretend to be a playboy prince, witty at every turn, but yet you see his other side, the one far different from his father, the one that cares about people.

The plot line kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book, guessing at every turn. I felt connected to the characters, feeling how they were feeling, and putting myself into the story. The story ended nicely, without a horrible cliff-hanger but open for another book, one that I can't wait for! I highly recommend this book to everyone! You all need to read this and immerse yourself in Celaena's world!

  1. Someone passed on an ARC copy of this to me, and I'm very excited to read it after all the rave reviews. I have to say I'm grateful it doesn't leave off on a horrible cliffhanger, as you said, otherwise I'd probably not be wanting to read it anytime soon. I sincerely dislike it when authors think that a cliffhanger is the only way to get a reader to read the sequel.

    Anyway, awesome review!

  2. I want to read Throne of Glass so bad! It sounds amazing but NetGalley didn't approve it for me so I'll have to try it again sometime later. But the plot sounds so intriguing and I'm glad you really loved it! :)

  3. I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. I've got an eGalley waiting for me, but I have others getting in the way right now. Regardless of whether I can finish it before the release or not, I have a feeling I'll be picking up a finished copy anyway. Sounds amazing!

  6. I'm reading this at the monment (SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!), I'm only a really short way in, but I totally agree with your review! I LOVE THIS. Okay, so bad me was going to read the ebooks first, but my review copies kept getting in the way and so I just jumped into this. But I am SO effing reading them later because I love this world and Celaena already. And Chaol and Dorian! So far... I think I'm Team Chaol, but I cannot wait to dig deeper into Dorian's character ;)

FANTASTIC review, Claire! You're possibly making me even more eager to go curl up with it again :)
