Synopsis: "Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses, host dinner parties, and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same boy who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city’s top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor’s impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

What it's about: Rachel's father is missing, presumed dead. Determined to find him and prove the city of Baalboden and it's Commander wrong, she attempts to flee to find him. However all is not as it seems, and this action is the catalyst for plenty of terrifying and deadly events to come.

What I thought: Defiance is going to be an unstoppable force in the book world, that much I can tell you. This story body slammed me to the ground and stole all of my breath - that is how I felt when reading it. I mean, it's about a girl kicking ass. No, I am being serious. This book is full of Rachel kicking ass, or thinking about kicking ass and Logan contemplating best case and worst case scenarios (which is totally cute!). If this doesn't draw you in, you must be mad. I suppose, if we want to get technical, there is love and loss, a power hungry Commander and a beast that breaths fire. We watch Rachel lose (almost) everything she loves and the one thing she has left be put in danger, watch the way she changes, watch her actions and it is an intense ride. All the characters in this story have this ability to suck you in and never let go of your emotions. Yes, I suggest picking up a copy now!

the good: Logan and his best/worst case scenarios. Such great parts in the book, they always made me laugh! Everything about this book captured my attention!

the bad: Sometimes I wanted to punch Rachel for being so damn stubborn and stupid, but it really does add to the story.

  3. HEROINE WHO IS ACTUALLY KICKING ASS?! YES! *fist pump* Rachel sounds like an awesome character and one I can relate to with being stubborn... and likely the stupid part too :P Very intrigued by Logan's 'best/worst case scenarios' and BEASTS THAT BREATH FIRE?! DANGER? LOVE AND LOSS? Ugh, as if I wasn't already DYING to read this. You've just made me so much more excited to get a copy.

Awesome review! Sounds like everything I've been hoping it to be :D
