Synopsis: Since the age of three, sixteen-year-old Evelyn Winters has been trained to be Daughter of the People in the underwater utopia known as Elysium. Selected from hundreds of children for her ideal genes all her life she’s thought that everything was perfect; her world. Her people. The Law.

But when Gavin Hunter, a Surface Dweller, accidentally stumbles into their secluded little world, she’s forced to come to a startling realization: everything she knows is a lie. Her memories have been altered. Her mind and body aren’t under her own control. And the person she knows as Mother is a monster.

Together with Gavin she plans her escape, only to learn that her own mind is a ticking time bomb... and Mother has one last secret that will destroy them all.

What it's about: Evelyn Winters is trained to be Daughter-of-the-people, her life is 'just about perfect'. She lives in an underwater glass dome, safe from the likes of the 'Surface Dwellers', until one day their perfect city is breached by Gavin, a Surface Dweller. Since his arrival, Evie is starting to remember things she doesn't quite understand, until it becomes all to clear that she and Gavin have to escape, fast!

What I thought: This was a fantastic novel, so different from anything I had expected. It's a bit violent, but very riveting. Evie is a strong and willful character, determined above all else. Gavin, the Surface Dweller, is strong and handsome, unsure and confused about this world he has stepped into, but also determined, to help Evie and escape the hidden horrors of Elysium. Mother was creepy and down-right scary and played the perfect villain for this story. While I was reading, I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen, but the few little twists had me stumbling to figure out what was going to happen next.

Fantastic read!

The Good: I love the idea of this underwater Utopia that J.A. Souders has created! Plus of course, there is the gorgeous Gavin! *Sigh*

The Bad: The constant forgetting and repetition - I fully understand this is to give emphasis, but re-reading the same things became slightly tedious.

  2. Nice review. Is there a strong connection to the Elysium of Greek mythology?
