Valkyrie Rising -
Ingrid Paulson
Released: October 9, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen

Synopsis: Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she’s there.

What Ellie doesn’t anticipate is Graham’s infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect something powerful and ancient to awaken in her and that strange whispers would urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, there’s suddenly a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.

Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly-epic coming of age

What it's about: Strange things are happening in the small Norwegian town that Ellie's grandmother lives in. Young men are disappearing and the whispers are of Valkyries - women of Nordic mythology.  Ellie is dropped head-first into a situation she doesn't quite understand, with ancestry she doesn't quite believe, and the result is explosive.

What I thought: At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. Within the first chapter, there was already tension between Ellie and her brother's gorgeous best friend Tucker. But as I delved deeper into Valkyrie Rising, I felt myself enjoying every moment - the action, the humor and even the romance. Valkyrie Rising gives a lovely twist on Nordic mythology, something different than the usual Greek myths. Ellie was a love-struck, confused sixteen year old, with so much courage and bravery in her heart. As she slowly learns the truth and begins to figure out what she is, the heat is on with a race against time - and the other Valkyrie beauties. Tucker is a wonderful character, perfect compliment for Ellie. His wit and humor makes you smile, just at the right moments. Even Loki who pops up now and again made for an interesting twist (Even though every time I read his name, all I could think of was Tom Hiddleston! Sorry Ingrid, that's probably not what you wanted to hear!)

Overall, I think this is a fantastic book, filled with all the ingredients for a fun-filled adventure!

The good: I loved that this was based in Norway and around Nordic Mythology!

The bad: It was left open for another book.... How long will we have to wait?! I am dying for more already!

She has always loved books and writing short stories, but was surprised one day to discover the story she was working on wasn't so short any more. VALKYRIE RISING is Ingrid's first novel.

Ingrid's grandmother might actually be a Valkyrie; she's still waiting for her to come clean.

  3. There are several places I would love to visit if I could visit Europe again. But the top would be Paris, France, because I missed my opportunity to really explore the Louvre when I went there last.

  6. If I could visit any European country, I would visit England. I've read so many historical fiction books that take place in England that there are a lot of places I'd like to see in person.
