Interview with Michelle K. Pickett!

Why did you decide to write dystopian fiction/post-apocalyptic fiction?

It really wasn't a conscious decision. I didn't set out to write a post-apocalyptic novel; the story came to me, rather than me actively deciding to write the story.

What, or who, has been the biggest influence in your writing?

My grandmother and my college English professor were both huge influences.  My grandmother instilled a love of reading in me.  She took me to the library nearly every weekend and we check out a stack of books to read together.

My college professor was the first who noticed my writing and encouraged me to pursue it.  She helped me get over my shyness and fear of rejection (although that never really goes away)

Tell us a little bit about POD’s and the Dystopian world you have created.

PODs is about a lethal pandemic that is killing the population of the world at an alarming rate. The government selects some gifted individuals to live in the underground PODs until the virus has died.  They are locked underground with no contact with family or friends.

When the PODs are finally opened everything seems fine until the scientists discover the virus has somehow survived. The villages are closed. The residents aren't allowed contact with outsiders or other districts to keep the infection rate at a minimum.

That's all I can really tell you without giving away spoilers.

What do you think our future is going to be like? Can you see any similarities in the world that you’ve created and our world today?

I don't know if it would be as extreme as in PODs, but I do think there could be a virus of some sort in our future. We already have issues with viruses that are resistant to antibiotics because of our overuse of antibiotics.  The so called "super bug viruses" are on the rise. In fact, my father just recovered from MRSA, which is a drug resistant virus.

What will you be doing come December 21st? And if you survive? (Assuming, of course, it’s the end of the world!)

I haven't paid much attention to the hype so I'll probably forget what day it is, so if it is the end of the world it'll catch me totally by surprise! I'll probably be finishing up my Christmas shopping since I always wait until the last minute. And on December twenty-second I'll take my kids to McDonalds to celebrate, because every kid knows McDonalds is the ultimate celebratory dinner.

What would be your favourite dystopian/post-apocalyptic novel?

Other than PODs?  J I really loved Divergent.  I fell in love with Four's character.  He's my book boyfriend.

Author Bio:

I've been an avid reader since a young child.  I began writing for personal enjoyment in college, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting.  Deciding sitting in a cubical all day was my form of cruel and unusual punishment, I finally decided to do what I really wanted to—share my passion for reading and writing with others.
My Debut young adult novel, PODs, will be published by Spencer Hill Press and is scheduled for release June 4th, 2013.  Milayna, my second YA title, will be released in March 2014.
I was born and raised in Michigan.  I now reside in a small community outside Houston, Texas with my incredibly supportive husband, four amazing children, a 125-pound lap dog and a cat that thinks she's the queen.
I write adult and young adult Sci/Fi and urban fantasy romance.
I LOVE to hear from readers. If you have a comment, question,       suggestion or just want to say hi, email me!

Publisher: Spencer Hill Press

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Eva is a chosen one. Chosen to live, while others meet a swift and painful death from an incurable virus so lethal, a person is dead within days of symptoms emerging. In the POD system, a series of underground habitats built by the government, she waits with the other chosen for the deadly virus to claim those above. Separated from family and friends, it’s in the PODs she meets David. And while true love might not conquer all, it’s a balm for the broken soul.

After a year, scientists believe the population has died, and without living hosts, so has the virus. That’s the theory, anyway. But when the PODs are opened, survivors find the surface holds a vicious secret. The virus mutated, infecting those left top-side and creating... monsters.

Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.
