definition: Contemporary Fiction [ kənˈtempəˌrerē ˈfikSHən ]

fictional story set in modern times (now a-days) which could really happen!

Contemporary fiction is a genre loved by some, loathed by others, but all in all, it's super popular.
Personally, I love a good contemp novel to break up all the paranormal and dystopian books I read - sometimes it's nice to read something real and relatable.

For this post, I'm going to tell you about some of the Contemporary Fiction I have loved, and why!

-

If I Lie - Corrine Jackson

Speechless - Hannah Harrington

Thirteen Reason's Why - Jay Asher

The Piper's Son - Melina Marchetta

The Day Before - Lisa Schroeder

Pushing the Limits - Katie McGarry

Each of these books I loved for different reasons - despite the fact that they are all  Contemporary Fiction. If I Lie is about a girl who's been accused of cheating on her soldier MIA boyfriend. Speechless is about a girl who takes a vow of silence after her needless gossip gets someone hurt. Thirteen Reason's Why is about the tapes left behind by the girl who committed suicide recently, explaining each and every reason leading up to her death. The Piper's Son is about a boy just trying to figure his life out. The Day Before is written in verse, about a chance meeting between a boy and girl, the secrets they keep and the day that changes their lives. Pushing the Limits is about a boy and a girl, so different yet so perfect for each other, and all the things they have to deal with. Each of these stories are "set in modern-times, fiction which could really happen" yet each of them touched my heart in different ways. To know that any of these things may happen, or have happened, gives a certain sort of a connection with a book, and that is why I will continue to read them.

  1. Hi!
I'm stopping in for the A-Z Challenge and as a book reader and writer, I was happy to see this list of contemporary book titles that I've never read but will check out now. Thanks for the suggestions! I enjoy reading the classics for their, well classic, takes on universal truths. But living now I appreciate contemporary fiction and its similarity to our current world! Enjoy the rest of this A-Z month!
    Best wishes,
