Halflings - Heather Burch

"After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world"

I feel like I have had a bad run of books recently - and this one is another.
I LOVED the synopsis. I LOVED the cover. I did not love the book.

We get thrown into the action head first, and meet our main character Nikki. She is tough, she rides a motorcycle and she has had a normal upbringing. Where are your parent's Nikki? Please tell me why they are never around and also let you ride a motorcycle. Believable? Maybe.

Love triangles. I love them as much as the next person, if not more. But this one felt very forced, and I really wish Ms Burch hadn't put it in. Even the "insta-love" between Mace and Nikki would have sufficed just fine. But a love triangle between two brothers kind of grossed me out. Why oh why.

Angels. My favourite "fantasy" type. The Holocaust? Ermm, not so much. I love how Heather tried to be creative, taking an event and twisting it into something else - believe me, I actually love seeing how people do that! In this case, not so much.

I will be reading book two, to see if it can redeem this story.

  1. Thanks for your review, sorry you didn't enjoy the book. It was a good book, but it's not for everyone. I was heartbroken by the ending, but I like your comment about reading Book 2 to see if things improve. Hope your next review is more enjoyable :)

  2. Our reviews say basically the exact same thing. I just did not like this one at all, but I don't think I'll read the next book.
