Torn - Stephanie Guerra

"Stella Chavez is your classic good girl: straight As, clean-cut boyfriends, and soccer trophies . You’d never guess that Stella’s dad was a drug addict who walked out when she was a kid. Or that inside, Stella wishes for something more.

New girl Ruby Caroline seems like Stella’s polar opposite: cursing, smoking, and teetering in sky-high heels . But with Ruby, Stella gets a taste of another world—a world in which parents act like roommates, college men are way more interesting than high school boys, and there is nothing that shouldn’t be tried once.

It’s not long before Stella finds herself torn: between the best friend she’s ever had and the friends she’s known forever, between her family and her own independence, between who she was and who she wants to be.

But Ruby has a darker side, a side she doesn’t show anyone—not even Stella. As Stella watches her friend slowly unravel, she will have to search deep inside herself for the strength to be a true friend, even if it means committing the ultimate betrayal"

I don't normally read a lot of contemporary fiction, but I'm glad I took the chance on this one!
This story is about two friends trying to get through their last year at high-school, and helping each other deal with the road-bumps they each face.

This story might just sound like a typical teenager's life, or it might shock you - Either way, it will open your eyes to just how real the world can be. Stella is a good girl, she helps her mum look after her two siblings and does all the chores around the house. Ruby, is a wild child, testing her limits every second of the day. Together, they make a dynamic duo, like ying and yang, balancing each other out.

This is not a happy boy meets girl story, it doesn't have a "happily ever after" ending - this story feels so real to it's core. It gave me a kick-in-the-heart, realising that even though this story may be fiction, that there may be someone out there who has to deal with the same problems. I encourage everyone to read, to give the story a chance, and see if it doesn't pull on your heart strings too.

Released on April 1st, make sure you keep an eye out :)

  1. Ya, this is my kind of read. I love books that are not all happy and sappy. Thanks for the informative review.
