This Weeks Discussion Questions

Week 1/ Chapters 1-8
1. If you were disfigured like Heven (by some sort of accident) do you think you would have reacted the same way as her? (loss of self-confidence, hiding yourself, etc)
I would love to say no, but the truth is I probably would have. There is no doubt in the world that being called a "freak" wouldn't hurt no matter how tough your skin may be. It hadn't even been a full year since the incident, and things like self-esteem take so much longer to heal especially when she will be stuck with the scars as a permanent reminder.

2. Do you think that Kimber’s plan for revenge against Cole (for kissing another girl) is a good idea?
No. Never ever ever. From the start when the idea popped into her head, I knew it was the wrong way to go about it. Cole had hurt her, that is true, but that should not be any sort of reason to go and deliberately hurt someone, especially someone you love very much. I really wanted to shake Heven for being so silly. She knew it was a bad idea, just she didn't say anything. Kimber was her best friend and if Heven had told her in the first place, it would have stopped a lot of hurt.

3. In the beginning chapters, Heven is very drawn to Sam but won’t admit it due to her own insecurities. Kimber begins to “date” Sam… do you think that Heven should have spoken up? Do you think Kimber should have seen Heven’s real feelings?
See, this whole situation was silly. I love how Cambria wrote it, it was a fantastic way to get Heven and Sam together. Kimber should never have "dated" Sam in the first place when she was still in love with Cole. Sam should never have "dated" Kimber just to get to Heven. Heven should have told her best friend her feelings because Kimber would have understood and would have backed off. I think Kimber was too busy trying to make Cole jealous, she didn't really see what was right under her nose.

4. Masquerade is broken in four separate POV’s: Heven, Sam, The Hate and The Hope. Do you think having multiple POV’s adds depth to the story? Why or why not?
Yes! I think it is fantastic! I love to be knowing what each of the characters is thinking and feeling, especially in a book that is as mysterious as this! I definitely think it adds depth and I wish more stories did this! Although, I am still guessing at who The Hate and The Hope are.

5. A great source of strength for Heven is her grandmother. Who do you think yours is/would be?
For a very long time it was my mother. Unfortunately some bonds break, no matter how strong. Now it would be my partner. We have been through so much together, in such a short space of time and I couldn't have done it without him!

Chapters 8-16 Discussion Questions
1. Sam is admittedly drawn to Heven before they even meet. Why do think this is?
2. In an earlier chapter The Hope states that Sam must prove himself. During these chapters Sam does some things – bad things – (covering up murder, fighting, hiding a body, etc.) all to protect Heven and his true identity. Do you think he was right to do these things?
3. In chapter twelve Kimber says some thing’s to Heven that make the reader wonder about their friendship. Do you think there is any truth Kimber’s drunken confessions? If so where do you think Heven and Kimber’s friendship goes from here?
4. Heven is changing, becoming more confident. Do you think that after something like this (her accident and disfigurement) happens to someone that she can ever go back to the person she was before? Do you think she will want to?
5. Toward the end of these set of chapters, Heven finds out Sam’s secret, who he really is. She has a strong reaction. Do you think you would react the same way? Why or why not?
Can't wait to see you all here again next Thursday!

  2. I totally get what you say about bonds that break. Me and my mom had a great relationship up until she didn't approve of the guy I was dating. It hurt so much that she would just write off someone so important to me and things have never really gotten better between us. Good thing you've got your partner on your side!

  3. Great answers this week!!!
It is hard when strong bonds break (happened to me too) but I am so glad you have your partner to rely on now! :)
The situation was silly between Cole and Kimber and Heven and Sam but I also think that to teenagers it was sort of realistic. LOL. But you are right if everyone would have just been honest with each other it would have cut out all that extra stuff! LOL.

  4. You're right about Heven being silly to not tell Kimber what a stupid idea it was to get back at Cole by going out with Sam. Sometimes as a best friend you have to just say things that your friend needs to hear whether they like it or not!

  5. I think I may be the most evil person because of all the blogs I've visited, I'm really the only one who would have gone with payback. LOL! I think my cynicism is going to eat me alive. 28 years old and I apparently haven't reached my peak of wisdom. Maybe in ten years. ;)

  6. I enjoyed your answers.
It is good to hear that you have a great partner who supports you, but it is sad that the one you would have once named here is no longer playing that role.

  7. Yep. We need Heven to quit playing invisible inside & out.

  9. Totally agreee that the whole "dated" thing should have never happened. I was yeeling at the book while reading about it. :P

  10. I felt the same way about Kimber and Sam dating! I always thought there was some kind of friend code where you weren't allowed to date a friend's ex so I kept thinking that it was a really bad idea for Sam to date Kimber to get to Heven! But I also agree that Cambria Hebert still wrote it in an awesome way that made me enjoy it more than I could have :) It makes me even more excited to see what's going to happen from now on -- I can't wait to read the rest! ;)

    Great answers, Claire!

  11. Sometimes bonds can be fixed don't give up on them. I hope it all works out for you :) So glad you are along on the journey. I hope you are loving the book. Just wait there are lots of suprises and you will see who the Hate and Hope are.

  12. I felt so much for Heven during those scenes because it seems like she only allows Cole and Kimber into her life. It looked like she would lise Kimber & Cole

  13. I completely agree with all your answers. I am still guessing too about The Hope and The Hate.

  14. Hi there! (new follower-gfc and linky) :)

I couldn't agree more about the POV question! I said the same thing. I love seeing situations from all sides and I love how the author incorporates it into the story. It gives you answers, and yet keeps things mysterious at the same time! I am totally loving this book!

Happy reading and I'll see ya next week for the next batch of questions!
