Guest Post by Heather M. White - Author of Redheads are Soulless

Have you ever thought about what you would do if a flu epidemic broke out? Or a massive war? What if the US dollar crashed? What if zombies knocked on your door? All these things could happen (well, besides the zombies)… And where would that leave you? This is my story, which isn’t really a story, but a dream I had. It felt very real to me. And oddly enough, I woke up sick the next day. Coincidence? Decide for yourself ;)

I still remember the day it happened. I was visiting my mom that day. I was on the computer, Skyping with my best friend, Tess. We weren’t talking about anything in particular – mostly the books we had read recently, Twitter gossip, and what we were going to eat for lunch (probably something very unhealthy, like cake or chocolate). Suddenly, my mom turned on the news and I was more than surprised by what I seen: Over 500k people died, within 24 hours, from a mysterious flu bug. There was no explanation, and no cure. I literally watched as the number jumped each passing second.

My thoughts: OK – where do we go from here? I don’t feel sick. Am I going to die? Is my family going to die? I also thought about family who lived close by. Were they going to be ok?

With my family in mind, I jumped on my brother’s razor (kind of like a 4-wheeler with 2 seats, or a golf cart made for mudding), and I went to get them. I made it there safely. It’s mostly back roads anyway. I was about to leave (with them following me)… I had a bad feeling. But, I pushed it aside and started driving home.

What I didn’t expect: RIOTING.

I had seen enough “apocalyptic” movies to know – when people think they’re going to die, they PANIC. Traffic was literally stopped. So I decided to take the “main” road (as opposed to the back, gravel roads). Suddenly, out of nowhere, people starting running towards me. I mean hundreds – maybe thousands – of people. I have no clue how, but I survived. Unfortunately, my cousins weren’t so lucky. I ended up walking the rest of the way home… My immediate family: mom, dad, brother, and husband were all fine.

We sat in front of the TV for the next few days. Surprisingly, we hadn’t lost power (and I was still able to Skype Tess – and Kim Kardashian – weird dream, I know!). Over half of the world’s population had died from the flu… and more than that from the rioting. But, good news: people had stopped dying.

I have no clue what happened from here (I woke up). Was it the beginning of the end? Did the world just move on like nothing happened? Or did it change everything? What would you do if you were among the last people alive?

Me: I have thought about this. It’s hard to say if I would panic or not. But I do know, people who panic die first. Where I would go from here? I have no idea. No matter what happens in life, all you can do is move forward and take it one day at a time… And may the odds ever be in your favor!
