Something Like Normal -
Trish Doller
Released: June 19, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury

Synopsis: "When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

What it's about: A Marine comes home to find his world is changing - his girlfriend is now with his brother, his dad is cheating on his mum and he is falling for Harper, the girl whose reputation he ruined in middle-school.

What I thought: I had heard so many good things about this book, and now I know why! This book is powerful, looking into the life of a Marine, and what they really go through. I just wanted to hug Travis so much! What a fantastic contemporary, I highly recommend it to all!

the good: Umm... Everything! No, but really - the characters were all so real, plagued with normal problems, none of them perfect. Travis didn't come back from Afghanistan ready to slip back into his old life, he was troubled with nightmares and hallucinations. He continued through, trying to be okay until he realised he finally needed to get help. Harper was such an amazing character! I found myself wishing to be her so much. The plot line was so real-life, so basic, I was never really one-hundred percent sure where it was going to go.

the bad: Couldn't we have had a really passionate, full-on, everything out there scene with Travis and Harper, please Ms Doller? I was waiting for that bit the whole time!
