"Blast from the Past" is my brand new feature - a post in which I talk about a book I read more than a year or so ago! Today I am featuring...

Poison Study -
Maria V. Snyder

Publisher: Mira

Synopsis: ""Choose: A quick death or slow poison ...

On the eve of her execution for murder, Yelena Zaltana is offered an incredible reprieve - on the condition that she becomes the food taster for the military leader of Ixia, Commander Ambrose.

Avoiding poison is the least of her troubles, however ... General Brazell, father of the man she killed, has vowed bloody revenge; she's beginning to have feelings for her captor, Valek; and someone is plotting the downfall of the current regime.

In a desperate race against time, Yelena must learn to control the growing magical talent withinn her and master the demons of her past. The Commander's life, the future of Ixia and all those she loves depend on it ...

When it was released - June 2004

When I first read it - Sometime in 2008

What I thought of it -
I randomly picked this one up in Kmart just because of it's pretty cover! I am so glad that it judged this book by it's cover because Maria V. Snyder quickly became my second favourite author of all time. I love all her works, but this one is still my favourite to this day.

The Good -

Magic, kick ass heroine and a handsome and fierce love interest? What doesn't sound good about that? Snyder created a world with such fantastic and lovable characters, you just can't help get sucked into Yelena's world.

The Bad -

Absolutely nothing.

Fun Facts -

Poison Study won/was a finalist for these awards -

  • 2005 - October Book Sense Pick
  • 2005 - Locus Magazine's Recommending Reading list
  • 2006 - Compton Crook Award
  • 2006 - Reader's Choice Award
  • 2006 - RITA Award Finalist
  • 2006 - ALEX Award Finalist

    Quotes -

“Yelena, you've driven me crazy. You've caused me considerable trouble and I've contemplated ending your life twice since I've known you." Valek's warm breath in my ear sent a shiver down my spine.

"But you’ve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.”

“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.

“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me.”

    - - -

“Everyone makes choices in life. Some bad, some good. It's called living, and if you want to bow out, then go right ahead. But don't do it halfway. Don't linger in whiner's limbo.”

    - - -

“What have I earned from you, Valek? Loyalty? Respect? Trust?"

"You have my attention. But give me what I want, and you can have everything.”
