Daphne and the Mysterious Girls Secret Bathroom Society -
Robert Shields
Released: December 19, 2011

Synopsis: Following years of persecution at the hands of Vivica Vance, Daphne Downing levels the playing field wielding her No. 2 Ticonderoga pencil as she belatedly enters the world of witchcraft. Daphne becomes part of the Mysterious Girls’ Secret Bathroom Society and finds out that the politics governing witchcraft are daunting and sometimes deadly. She realizes she is aligned with the Charmers in this political battle with the Spiters led by her nemesis, Vivica. Along the way, she discovers that witches do not perform magic or witchcraft but a differentiated form of physics that only some women have mastered. The story deepens as she learns about the long history of witches’ domination and annihilation of wizards.

What it's about: Witches and magic with an amazing twist!

What I thought: Robert Shields has written a wonderful book. He has taken something as popular as witches and magic and given it his own creative twist - with fantastic results! Daphne discovers that magic is real, but it is nothing like she ever thought. Witches cast spells by manipulating matter using physics - don't worry, it's all explained as you go along ;) While this book is unique in itself, you don't get bogged down with the focus on the girl getting the boy, which is why I think it would appeal more to the younger readers - However I still think it would suit all other ages too. If you are looking for your next magic-kick (especially if you are still mourning the loss of Harry Potter) then pick this one up and you just may be pleasantly surprised!

the good: I found this book to be quite hilarious! Not sure if I was the only one, but there are so many moments that made me burst into school-girl giggles.

the bad: It does take slightly longer than normal to get into, but if you bear that in mind when reading, and focus on the good stuff you know is coming, you'll be fine!
