"Blast from the Past" is my brand new feature - a post in which I talk about a book I read more than a year or so ago! Today I am featuring...

Blue Bloods -
Melissa de la Cruz

Publisher: Hyperion

Synopsis: "When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, it carried on board the men and women who would shape America: Miles Standish; John Alden; Constance Hopkins. But some among the Pilgrims were not pure of heart; they were not escaping religious persecution. Indeed, they were not even human. They were vampires. The vampires assimilated quickly into the New World. Rising to levels of enormous power, wealth, and influence, they were the celebrated blue bloods of American society.

The Blue Bloods vowed that their immortal status would remain a closely guarded secret. And they kept that secret for centuries. But now, in New York City, the secret is seeping out. Schuyler Van Alen is a sophomore at a prestigious private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapated mansion. Schuyler is a loner...and happy that way. Suddenly, when she turns fifteen, there is a visible mosaic of blue veins on her arm. She starts to crave raw food and she is having flashbacks to ancient times. Then a popular girl from her school is found dead... drained of all her blood. Schuyler doesn't know what to think, but she wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?

When it was released - April 2006

When I first read it - Sometime in 2009

What I thought of it -
This was another classic "random pick in Kmart" of mine - I picked up the first 4 books on impulse! Blue Bloods is a vampire book, with a bit of a twist. I found it so like other vampire books, but so unlike them as well.

The Good -
There are good vampire and bad vampires and of course, super good looking ones too. There are secrets and betrayal, everything you need from a paranormal book. Plus there are like 7 of them in the series!

The Bad -
These are awfully short books and once you get past the excruciatingly long wait for the next one, you have read it within a day and then its done.

Fun Facts -

There is a spin-off series being released fall 2012 called Wolf Pact. There is also a graphic novel being released in 2013.

    Quotes -

“Black is the color of night. White is the true color of death”

    - - -

“She nodded... and was about to turn away. Then, as if she thought better of it, she reached out and grabbed his arm. "Jack."
    "Yes?"
"I. . ." she faltered. She knew what she wanted to tell him, but she couldn't bring herself to say the words.
It turned out she didn't have to. Jack put a hand to his heart and nodded. "I feel the same way about you.”

    - - -
“He kissed her, and their souls melted into each other in a melody older than time.”
