Through to You -
Emily Hainsworth
Released: October 2, 2012
Publisher: Baltzer and Bray

Synopsis: Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. Viv was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his identity after a career-ending football injury, picking up the pieces when his home life shattered, and healing his pain long after the meds wore off. And now, he’d give anything for one more glimpse of her. But when Cam makes a visit to the site of Viv’s deadly car accident, he sees some kind of apparition. And it isn’t Viv.

The apparition’s name is Nina, and she’s not a ghost. She’s a girl from a parallel world, and in this world, Viv is still alive. Cam can’t believe his wildest dreams have come true. All he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But things are different in this other world: Viv and Cam have both made very different choices, things between them have changed in unexpected ways, and Viv isn’t the same girl he remembers. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets, too, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become and the part Nina played in his parallel story, he’s forced to choose—stay with Viv or let her go—before the window closes between them once and for all.

What it's about: Cam is struggling to deal with the death of his girlfriend Viv. When a he see's a strange, ghost-like girl, who isn't Viv, he discovers a portal into another world, like his but different. In this world, Viv is alive and that's all that matters now. But this Viv is different, and he feels something towards Nina that he just can't quite figure out.

What I thought: I wanted to love this book. Ever since I read the synopsis, I have been super excited about reading this book. However, we can't always love every book we read. Through To You is a fantastic concept, with two world which are the same, yet different. Cam finds his girlfriend alive in this other world and they reunite. It should be happy and romantic, but of course it isn't because there is much more to the story. What annoyed me the most, was Cam. I couldn't help get the feeling the Cam always felt sorry for himself. He had a bad football accident and he can't play. His Dad left his Mum for another woman. He lost his girlfriend in a car accident. It is all very upsetting and dramatic, yet I just wanted to punch him and tell him life could be a whole lot worse. Disliking the main character this much was always going to put a dampener on the story and I found myself rushing to get through the book so I could move onto something else.

Sure there were great parts of the book, when Cam is with Owen and Nina, and at the end, when he finally figures it all out, but it wasn't enough to pull it into a higher rating. I loved Emily's writing and will definitely be reading whatever comes next from her.

the good: The story line was interesting and made me keep reading until the end. There is a slight twist towards the end which I didn't expect too.

the bad: Well, if you couldn't tell from above, Cam is the bad. No love lost there folks.

  1. haha wow you were definitely frustrated in this novel, especially from Cam. I get how sometimes you just want to move on and go to the next thing in the novel. I've heard mixed reviews of this novel, not sure if its my cup of tea

  2. I understand being frustrated with a main character. Especially when they feel sorry for themselves!! However despite that I still really want to read this one. It's been on my to buy list for quite some time and despite mixed reviews I am still looking forward to it.
