What's Left OF Me -
Kat Zhang
Released: October 1, 2012
Publisher: Harper Collins Childrens

Synopsis: "Eva and Addie live in a world where everyone is born with two souls, but where only the dominant one is allowed to survive childhood. Fifteen years old, and closer even than twins, the girls are keeping Eva, the ‘second soul’, a secret. They know that it’s forbidden to be hybrid, but how could they ever be apart?

When a dramatic event reveals what really happens to hybrids if they are discovered, Eva and Addie face a dangerous fight for survival, neither wanting to be the one left behind…

What it's about: A world in which one body contains two souls - hybrids. Addie has a secret, that her other soul Eva is still alive, and that could get them into terrible danger. After being shipped away to a psychiatric hospital to help 'cure' Addie and get rid of Eva, they both have to find a way to escape, before it's too late.

What I thought: What's Left of Me is a fantastic opening novel in the Hybrid Chronicles. We see the world through Eva's eyes, watching as Addie controls everything they say and do. We feel Eva's imprisonment as much as her, until she begins to learn how to control again. We feel the pain they both feel, the guilt and the anger too. Kat Zhang has done an amazing job of making us feel for her characters, placing us into their world. All of these individual souls are relatable to everyone, each in their own way. I cheered when they had a small victory and held my breath when they were in danger. This world of hybrids that Kat Zhang has created is wonderful, down to the last detail, apart from the soul killing of course.

Now go on down to your local bookstore and grab yourself a copy!

the good: I love the fact that Kat Zhang has created so many characters, each with different personalities, yet has put two of these in one body. This idea of hybrids really intrigues me!

the bad: I found it somewhat confusing at some points, with the two souls having different names, it was hard keeping up sometimes.

  1. That sounds like a fascinating world! I can't imagine having two souls and that one will be removed. What happens to those souls? Are they lost souls? Do they die? It all sounds terribly creepy.

  4. great review Claire! I have been seeing this book all over the blogosphere lately, I'm really curious about it. I think I would get confused with the whole two souls, one body, two different names thing as well!

  6. There is a lot of conflict for this book.
Some say it is a replicate of The Host by Stephanie Meyer, which I adored, by the

    way.
And some say that it is unique and beautiful.
But i will add it to my TBR and hopefully read it soon.
To see where all this conflict comes from.
    GREAT review, Claire
