Dear Cassie -
Lisa Burstein
Released: March 5, 2013
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Synopsis: What if the last place you should fall in love is the first place that you do?

You’d think getting sent to Turning Pines Wilderness Camp for a month-long rehabilitation “retreat” and being forced to re-live it in this journal would be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.

You’d be wrong.

There’s the reason I was sent to Turning Pines in the first place: I got arrested. On prom night. With my two best friends, who I haven’t talked to since and probably never will again. And then there’s the real reason I was sent here. The thing I can’t talk about with the guy I can’t even think about.

What if the moment you’ve closed yourself off is the moment you start to break open?

But there’s this guy here. Ben. And the more I swear he won’t—he can’t—the deeper under my skin he’s getting. After the thing that happened, I promised I’d never fall for another boy’s lies.

And yet I can’t help but wonder…what if?

What it's about: The companion novel to Pretty Amy, this story is told from Cassie's point of view, and the aftermath that she has to deal with.

What I thought: Pretty Amy was one of my five-star books of 2012, so I had seriously high expectations when I started Dear Cassie. Lisa Burstein did not disappoint. Dear Cassie had all the punch, wit, angst and emotion that I'd hoped for. In Pretty Amy, we really only get a glimpse of Cassie, but now we get to know her so much better. Cassie is foul-mouthed and tough, but is she tough enough to last thirty days out in the middle of no-where with Nez (who's a bitch), Troyer (who doesn't speak) and Ben (who is making her feel things she doesn't want to). Every night when she writes in her assessment diary, she opens up about her family, about Aaron and what went down before she left. Sometimes I wanted to punch Cassie, but mostly I just wanted to hug and comfort her. I felt connected to her as a character and it made me get emotionally involved in this story.

Dear Cassie will make you laugh and maybe even make you cry. But it will definitely leave you wanting more. More please Lisa Burstein?!

The Good: I love that we got to see all sides of Cassie in this novel.

The Bad: I would have loved a little more 'love' between Ben and Cassie.

  1. This is not a genre I have read, but it looks interesting, Claire. Happy A to Z!
