Looking for Alibrandi - Melina Marchetta

Released: March 26, 2014
Publisher: Penguin AUS
SynopsisFor as long as Josephine Alibrandi can remember, it’s just been her, her mom, and her grandmother. Now it’s her final year at a wealthy Catholic high school. The nuns couldn’t be any stricter—but that doesn’t seem to stop all kinds of men from coming into her life.

Caught between the old-world values of her Italian grandmother, the nononsense wisdom of her mom, and the boys who continue to mystify her, Josephine is on the ride of her life. This will be the year she falls in love, the year she discovers the secrets of her family’s past—and the year she sets herself free.

Told with unmatched depth and humor, this novel—which swept the pool of Australian literary awards and became a major motion picture—is one to laugh through and cry with, to cherish and remember.

What I Thought: Looking for Alibrandi is one of the first Young Adult books I have ever read, so when Penguin sent me this beautiful new hardback edition, I jumped at the chance to read it (yet again) and review it for the first time ever. Josephine Alibrandi is not quite a "wog" yet not quite an Australian, a bastard who has never known her father and is a scholarship student who has to endure the pretentious snobs at her wealthy Catholic school. Then of course there is John Barton, the school captain at the Catholic brother school, who is set to be Prime Minister if his overbearing father has anything to do with it; and Jacob Coote, the school captain at the local public school, who just wants to be a mechanic and open up his own garage. On top of all that, Josephine's father blow's into town and suddenly the world of Alibrandi is turned upside down.

This a story about a girl who thinks she know's about life, know's what she wants, and then realises that the unexpected reality can be so much better than the faraway dreams. Rereading it in the one sitting, made me realise that I love this book just as much as I did when I first read it, and I don't think that is ever going to change.

Looking for Alibrandi is an absolute classic in my eyes, with so many lessons to teach to young girls about life. If you haven't read this one yet, I highly suggest you do.

The Good: Beautifully written story about family, love and loss.

The Bad: This is Marchetta we are talking about - there is never any bad.
