These Broken Stars -
Amie Kaufman &
Meagan Spooner
Released: November 20, 2013
Publisher: Allen & Unwin

Synopsis: It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets to the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they're worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other's arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder - would they be better off staying in this place forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won't be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.

What I thought: I was so very very excited for These Broken Stars - it sounded totally up my alley. I had seriously high expectations for this novel but Kaufman and Spooner totally blew them out of the park.
We start with the meeting of Tarver and Lilac, and we learn a bit about the world that they're living in. Space ships, lots of habitable planets, travelling the galaxy at hyperspeed... It certainly sounds like the kind of world I would love to see. But before long we get into the real action of the story - Lilac and Tarver stranded alone on an unknown planet. Together they have to brave the elements, and each other if they want to survive.

I fell in love with Tarver instantly, because he is such a strong yet vulnerable character. Lilac on the other hand gave me whiplash with her emotions and tantrums, yet you couldn't help but sympathise with the girl. She is also such a strong character, and you can see this by all the things she has to go through. Even when she thinks she is going mad.

So much happens in such a short period of time in this novel, but I never felt like it was too cramped. For awhile they are trekking across this planet, sometimes even barely conversing, but I never felt like it was too boring either. Kaufman and Spooner know exactly what they are doing, giving us a little bit more action to keep us holding on, just when we might be thinking about letting go.

These Broken Stars ticked all the right boxes for me, and it has to be one of my favourite books of 2013. I certainly can't wait for the next novel in this series!

The Good: This story has wicked plot progression! Plus, there is Tarver... ;)

The Bad: The next novel not for another year!
