Welcome to the A-Z Blogging Challenge!

Today's topic is:

- Everybody loves this book... Except me -

You know that book. That one that everyone raves about, that you just 'have to read' and yet once you manage to start (maybe complete if you're determined), you just can't get into it. You had such high expectations and they come crashing down around you.

Here are the books that happened to me:

-

The first one to disappoint is The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas. Everyone raved about this one. It got so many good reviews. There was even a mini-television series made for it. I, however, could not stand it. I'm not even one-hundred percent sure I finished it. It was that unmemorable for me.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is another one. I disliked the book immensely. The movie was so-so. Sure, the whole concept was a good idea, I suppose. The execution, was just not for me.

The Collector by John Fowles - oh wow. This is supposed to be a literary classic, up there with Dickens and the likes. No. Just no. It was not eye-opening. It was creepy, and way too over the top for me.

BUT the major one for me would have to be Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling. It shouldn't even be possible right? I disliked Rowling's writing so much, I haven't even bothered picking up another Harry Potter book, despite protests of her writing getting better each book.... Maybe one day.

  1. Hi Claire,
Ha ha! I love your topic for today!
Although I do like the Harry Potter stories, I'm not keen on JK Rowling's writing style. I'd also say that the first book is the best - some of the others seem rushed. Just my opinion though. :-)

  2. Hi Claire,

Guess this happens to everyone. Earlier when I'd pick up a book that Everyone recommends, and I'd absolutely hate it, I thought I was weird, but now I know I'm unique :)

  3. Mine = Wicked. Hated that book, and everyone seems to love it. However, I did love the play. Great post!

  4. I kind of have the opposite problem. Books that a lot of people don't like I will like. I like most of what I choose to read, but that's beside the point.

But for the exact reasons you mention above, I tend to stay away from the hype books. I'm glad I discovered Indie. There's so many good reads, ones that most people will ignore or never know about.

  5. I never got into the Mortal Instruments books. Everyone talks about them and I owned them at one point and started reading the first, but lost interest a couple chapters in. It just didn't grab me in the way that demanded I sit down, read and not stop until I reach the end.

  6. I finally got around to reading The Catcher in the Rye a few years ago.

Didn't get it. Such a build up, such a classic. Didn't like it, forced myself to finish it.

But I understand and respect that others love it. We all have our ideals, they just differ.

  7. One of my "most hated that everyone loved" was Bridges of Madison County. Ugh!

  8. Hi, Claire,

I tried one of the Harry Potter books too and didn't make it past the first few pages. To each his own, I guess.

  9. I'm with Ermie on Harry Potter. While I loved the premise, the writing left much to be desired.

  10. I have this problem ALL the time! It's not with EVERY book, but it's gotten so bad that I have started avoiding picking up "popular" books because I'm afraid I'm going to hate them and I don't want to deal with it!

  11. Let me not even get started on Fifty Shades of Grey...GAH! I couldn't sleep after Never Let Me Go because I found it too haunting...not sure if that counts as liking or disliking it.

  12. I never apologize for not liking a book that everyone else loves. A lot of people raved about Fifty Shades of Grey, and I found that book annoying because I do not like a woman who acts that submissive, or a dude who brags that much about his material wealth. Also, I love a lot of books some people will not even acknowledge when I bring up in the discussion. For instance I love the book Tiare in Bloom, and I rarely hear the masses praises it from the roof tops. It is still one of my favorite books, and I do not need everyone to be reading it to like it. I found you via the A to Z Challenge.

  13. I hate when you pick up a book that everyone loves except you. It's the worst. It always makes me feel like I'm missing a bunch of pages out of the book or something. Great post!
